Rediscover Magic, Love & Happiness In Orlando

By Nigel G. Worrall

Travelers have plenty of options when it comes to holiday locations, but there’s a certain magic in Orlando that simply can’t be found anywhere else. But what is it about Orlando that brings families together and helps them create the memories of a lifetime?

First, take into account Orlando’s virtually endless blue skies, with an average daily temperature of 72F (22C) that makes swimming, golfing, tennis, boating, waterskiing, and countless other activities possible year-round. Now, add in world-class shopping, dining, nightlife, arts, culture and sporting events…

Of course, one can’t think of Orlando without the world’s most renowned theme parks and water parks coming to mind, as well as hundreds of smaller attractions, events and activities that offer something for every member of the family. Each year, the theme parks and attractions continue to grow, offering new and exciting rides and shows to make visitors fall in love with Orlando time and time again.

Spring 2012 sees SeaWorld Orlando invite guests for an even more intimate look at the gentle creatures of the sea with the opening of Turtle Trek, featuring two naturalistic habitats: one teeming with hundreds of freshwater fish and gentle manatees, the other with more than 1,500 saltwater fish and more than a dozen sea turtles. But it’s the first-of-its-kind 3-D/360-degree dome theater film that truly captures the hearts of visitors as they get to witness, seemingly firsthand, a sea turtle’s incredible underwater journey.

LEGOLAND Florida made its Central Florida debut this past fall to rave reviews from parents of toddlers to tweens. Coming May 26, the imaginative play park is joined by an all new LEGOLAND water park, featuring a wave pool, build-a-raft lazy river, tube slides, body slides and an interactive water-play structure called DUPLO Safari.

Parents, rest assured, Orlando isn’t just for the kids. Earlier this year, Walt Disney World Speedway unleashed the Exotic Driving Experience, where soccer moms and Scout Master dads can trade in the minivan for an afternoon and experience the thrill of driving the world's fastest and most exotic sports cars. Kids will seldom see Dad as happy as when he’s behind the wheel of a Ferrari 458 Italia, Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570, Lamborghini Gallardo 560, Audi R8 or a Porsche 997S. Vroom, vroom…

Of course, Walt Disney World Resort knows a thing or two about making magic, and it’s in no short supply this year. This spring, Magic Kingdom's Fantasyland will double in size with the addition of the new Storybook Circus area with dueling Dumbo attractions and Great Goofini Coaster, as well as interactive role-play adventure games. More rides and shows will be added later this fall.

Meanwhile at Downtown Disney, families are sure to come together at Splitsville when the new attraction opens in the fall. The 31-lane retro bowling alley promises billiards, dining, dancing, and an outdoor patio.

Nearby, Universal Orlando Resort is bringing movie magic to life with an all new Despicable Me attraction at Universal Studios Florida based on the 3-D/CGI feature film. The ride puts thrill-seekers in the middle of a hysterical high-tech 3-D digital adventure with the complete cast of characters from the animated movie. Next door at Universal's Islands of Adventure, The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman recaptures the thrill of its original release with new cutting-edge animation and crystal clear 4K High-Def visuals.

Family fun is the name of the game at Universal CityWalk’s new Hollywood Drive-In Golf, where mom, dad and the kids can battle for bragging rights at two movie-themed 18-hole miniature golf courses. Themed to popular Sci-Fi flicks of the 1950s, the new putt-putt easily bridges the generation gap.

But the icing on the cake is being able to enjoy these incredible attractions, rides, shows and experiences and still enjoy all the comforts of home. Sure, Orlando has plenty of hotel rooms to choose from, but put even the most tight-knit clan in a small hotel room with a single bathroom for a week, and all hope of family harmony may soon be out the window…
